Food & Menu

Dinner and conversation during dinner on the beach on Dodd Island

Sitting on a drift log on a beach enjoying a delicious meal is one of the great pleasures of sea kayak touring. Our meal plan is part of your vacation experience and we love to prepare menus that are both delicious and nutritionally sound. All of the recipes are written in detail and are easy to follow.

It’s easy for us to accommodate a wide variety of diets, including vegetarian and vegan diets as well those with food allergies and intolerances. We practice Food Safe procedures and make sure to not use cutting boards and kitchen utensils used to make the vegetarian and meat dishes. If a guest has an anaphylactic food allergy, we talk with the guest and either remove or quarantine the food items and educate the other guests to eliminate contamination sources.

One of the best features of sea kayaking is the amount of food – especially fresh fruit and vegetables – that we can take on our expeditions. While you are kayaking, you prepare most of of your meals from scratch using locally grown (Port Alberni) organic produce whenever possible. As the year progresses, we add seasonal fruit and produce into our menu.

Mornings are fortified with tea and freshly roasted premium coffee. You get real cream! Lunch is usually an impromptu event on one of the many islands you visit. Dinner is a relaxed and social affair. We always have an appetizer as it gets food into your crew when you’re back from a day’s paddling. The appetizer buys you time while your designated kitchen crew makes dinner.

Chances are you’ll be eating on a sandy beach, sitting in the chairs that we provide with driftwood, cedars and hemlock providing the ambiance for noshing, conversing and marveling at the stunning views.

In inclement weather you can eat eat under a large group tarp or two and listen to the pitter patter of the rain.

If you catch fish, you can creatively season it from our well provisioned spice kit. If you plan to fish, you will need a Government of Canada Department of Fisheries and Oceans Salt Water recreational fishing licence.

Guests can bring wine and spirits on their trip. Batstar guests are always conscientious about their alcohol consumption and are respectful of the environment, other guests, other kayakers. All garbage is taken back to We bring back empties back with us.

We have a commercial glass-front refrigerator at our B&B just for your trip food.
